Skerik’s Bandalabra
Sunday, 9/16/2012
Stanleys Pub, 323 Stanley Ave, Cincinnati, OH
8pm

Skerik, the enduringly saxophonic, punk jazz iconoclast, will be performing at Stanley’s Pub in Cincinnati, OH on Sunday, September 16 with his latest project, Bandalabra.  Joining him are three of his fellow Seattle hometown’s most revered players: Andy Coe on electric guitar, Evan Flory Barnes on upright bass and Dvonne Lewis on drums.  In Skerik’s words, Bandalabra is intended to conjure the sounds of “Fela Kuti meeting Steve Reich in rock’s backyard.”  A bold assertion, but one for which the music bears witness.  Together, the quartet syncopates and snakes, floats free and snaps tight with hypnotic afrobeat rhythms, minimalist canons and improvised harmonics.  There’s a duality that demands listeners both dance and get lost in its sound. Strange Arrangement, a quartet from Chicago, puts on a show that takes an audience through several different musical genres including jazz, funk, folk, rockabilly, soul, and progressive- and psychedelic-rock and draws on influences from Herbie Hancock, Umphreys McGee, Phish and Wilco. In early 2011, the band released its second record, Polygraph, which combines its unique musical landscapes into tightly knit, well-crafted songs ranging from funk, blues, and rockabilly to progressive psychedelic funk.
