Country singer and songwriter Sara Evans debuts with the Pops NOV 4-6

The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra welcomes the award-winning country singer and songwriter Sara Evans for her Pops debut for a three night all-American program at the Taft Theatre on Friday, Nov. 4 (8 p.m.), Saturday, Nov. 5 (8 p.m.) and Sunday, Nov. 6 (2 p.m.). Known for her “classic Nashville” sound, the multi-platinum star will perform hits like “Suds in the Bucket,” “Born to Fly,” and “A Little Bit Stronger” all bathed in full orchestral colors with the Pops. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the direction of Pops Conductor John Morris Russell presents “Peter and the Wolf” on November 19 at Taft Theatre, the first Lollipops Family Concert of the 2016-17 season. The concert will feature original illustrations by Cincinnati’s own C.F. Payne accompanying Prokofiev’s delightful musical tale, Peter and the Wolf. Angela Powell Walker, artistic director for the School for Creative and Performing Arts, will narrate the work. Read more

The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra welcomes back the multi-talented performer Vanessa Williams for a one-night-only performance at the Taft Theatre on Sunday, October 9 at 7 p.m. The Grammy- and Tony-winning singer and actress will perform classic Broadway favorites, as well as many of her chart-topping pop and R&B hits, complete with rich orchestrations performed by the full Pops Orchestra. Associate Conductor Keitaro Harada also leads the first half of the program including additional Broadway tunes like “Seasons of Love” from Rent, “Children Will Listen” from Into the Woods, and “On Broadway” from Smokey Joe’s Café. Battlestar Galactica and Miami Vice star Edward James Olmos joins the Pops for season opener Sept 16-18

The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the direction of Pops Conductor John Morris Russell presents “Hollywood Action & Adventure” on September 16-18 at the Taft Theatre in Downtown Cincinnati. The Orchestra will perform music from action and adventure films such as The Avengers, Mission Impossible, Raiders of the Lost Ark and more. Narrating the concert and sharing stories from the set of such blockbusters is Academy Award-nominated actor, Edward James Olmos, best known for his roles as General Adama in Battlestar Galactica, Lieutenant Castillo in Miami Vice and Detective Gaff in Blade Runner. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, under the direction of guest conductor Michael Krajewski, presents a special one-night only event, The Sounds of Simon & Garfunkel. The Sounds of Simon & Garfunkel will take audiences on a musical journey that began in the 1960’s and continued throughout the decades. The Pops will perform classic Simon & Garfunkel hits such as The Sounds of Silence, Homeward Bound, and Mrs. Robinson, all with rich orchestral textures at Music Hall, Sunday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. The evening will feature vocalists AJ Swearingen and Jon Beedle. Cincinnati Pops Orchestra Releases ‘American Originals’ on September 11

Rosanne Cash, Joe Henry, Dom Flemons, Aoife O’Donovan, Over The Rhine, and Comet Bluegrass All-Stars and the iconic Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have come together under the direction of Pops Conductor John Morris Russell to honor Stephen Foster, the father of American music, in a 17-track live recording, ‘American Originals,’ out Fri., Sept. 11 on the Fanfare Cincinnati label, distributed by Naxos.

In addition to a who’s-who of American Roots artists, Russell engaged arrangers and composers Chris Walden, Rob Mounsey, Rebecca Pellett, Peter Boyer and the Cincinnati Pops’ own Timothy Berens for a live, recorded three-day concert in January 2015 at Cincinnati’s historic Music Hall. Read more

Cincinnati Pops Orchestra Conductor John Morris Russell will spend the day with the MYCincinnati string youth orchestra on Friday, July 31, rehearsing with the student musicians from 1:30-3:45 p.m. and conducting a performance beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Price Hill Recreation Center, 959 Hawthorne Ave. This performance is free and open to the public. In addition to the MYCincinnati string youth orchestra based out of Price Hill, another youth orchestra program similar to MYCincinnati, the visiting Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project, will also participate. With 50 MYCincinnati students and 40 Chicago students participating, these connections between youth from different cities through music help forge not only musical bonds, but lifetime teamwork and social skills with peers from other regions. Cincinnati Pops begins summer series with traditional crowd-pleasing Broadway Sing-Along June 6 at Riverbend Music Center

The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra will begin its summer series at Riverbend Music Center’s Corbett Pavilion on Saturday, June 6 at 8 p.m. with a special “Broadway Sing- Along” featuring classic Broadway hits and inviting the audience to sing along. Conductor John Morris Russell will lead Orchestra and audience in classics such as “Defying Gravity” from Wicked and selections from Rocky Horror Picture Show. Special guests Julia Murney (who impressed Cincinnati Pops audiences when she stepped in at the last minute for “Wicked Divas” in 2009), Doug LaBrecque, the Young Professionals Choral Collective, and Cincinnati Men’s Chorus Männerchor round out a top-notch cast to offer a wide variety of tunes. The winners from the ArtsWave “Cincy Sings” competition will also make an appearance on the program. Read more
