The Wood Brothers are back on the road this September and October. The three week run will focus heavily on shows in the Southeast and Midwest in a number of cities yet to be visited since the release of their critically acclaimed, Buddy Miller-produced album, The Muse. On Monday, September 29, they’ll stop in Cincinnati, OH to play The 20th Century Theater.

A three-piece unit comprised of brothers Oliver and Chris Wood along with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix, The Wood Brothers sound is an amalgam of vintage roots music, drawing equal inspiration from blues, folk, gospel and jazz. Their earthy Americana-based sound is adorned by the brothers’ high and lonesome harmonies, stinging slide guitar lines and floor-stomping rhythms, but at the foundation is exquisite songwriting. Paul Thorn readies ‘Too Blessed to Be Stressed’ album for August 19 release – 20th Century Theater on 10/23

Paul Thorn’s new album Too Blessed To Be Stressed stakes out new territory for the popular roots-rock songwriter and performer. “In the past, I’ve told stories that were mostly inspired by my own life,” the former prizefighter and literal son of a preacher man offers. “This time, I’ve written 10 songs that express more universal truths, and I’ve done it with a purpose: to make people feel good.”

Which explains numbers like the acoustic-electric charmer “Rob You of Your Joy,” where Thorn’s warm peaches-and-molasses singing dispenses advice on avoiding the pitfalls of life. And then there is the title track which borrows its tag from a familiar saying among the members of the African-American Baptist churches Thorn frequented in his childhood. “I’d ask, ‘How you doin’, sister?’ And what I’d often hear back was, ‘I’m too blessed to be stressed.’” Read more

Sarah Jarosz is a multi-Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who hails from just outside of Austin, TX and makes her home in New York City. Now 23-years-old, she graduated in 2013 from New England Conservatory with a degree in contemporary improvisation in the same month her third album, Build Me Up From Bones, was released. Jarosz, who fits comfortably where contemporary folk, Americana, and roots music intersect, has long been embraced for the depth and maturity of her songwriting, her pure and nuanced vocals, and her instrumental mastery—switching between octave mandolin, banjo, guitar, and mandolin as the songs dictate. Build Me Up From Bones received two Grammy nominations and appeared on NPR’s Top Ten Folk and Americana albums for 2013. She has appeared on Conan, Austin City Limits twice, A Prairie Home Companion, and the BBC Series The Transatlantic Sessions.

Cincy Groove: When did you write your first song?

Sarah Jarosz: I messed around with writing melodies for about as long as I can remember, but I think my first “real” song was Left Home which I wrote when I was 12 or 13. Read more
