Chuck Prophet has unveiled “Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins,” the title track from his upcoming LP out February 10th on Yep Roc. The gritty and jangly song pays homage to the legendary “I Fought The Law” singer. The story of Bobby Fuller, who died mysteriously in 1960s Los Angeles, sits at the crossroads of some of the record’s main themes: death, celebrity and the disillusion of a California dream. Tales of doomed love, loneliness and fast-paced violence add to a musical narrative that Prophet describes as “California noir.” Read more

Postmodern Jukebox
1/23/17
Taft Theatre, 317 E 5th St, Cincinnati, OH
7pm doors, 8pm show, Buy Tickets

Imagine wandering into a nightclub somewhere on the outskirts of time. A classic jukebox in the corner plays timeless music with oddly familiar modern lyrics, incongruously marrying the 21st-century party vibe of Miley Cyrus or the minimalist angst of Radiohead with the crackly warmth of a vintage 78 or the plunger-muted barrelhouse howl of a forgotten Kansas City jazzman. The dance floor is full of revelers twerking in poodle skirts, while at the bar, well-heeled hipsters balance a martini in one hand with a smartphone in the other. Read more

Melissa Etheridge with the Cincinnati Pops
1/8/17
Taft Theatre, 317 E 5th St, Cincinnati, OH
7pm show, Buy Tickets

Melissa Etheridge has done some pretty gutsy things in her stellar career. She’s shown no fear in forthrightly standing up for her truths, both in her songs and her life.

But as an artist she’s never quite laid it on the line like she does on MEmphis Rock and Soul, scheduled for release on October 7, 2016 via Stax Records, a division of Concord Music Group. Sure, she’s sung songs by some of her biggest heroes before. But Otis Redding? Mavis Staples? Sam and Dave? Rufus Thomas? These are some of the names, some of the voices of music at the pinnacle of an era in American music, the people indelibly identified with the songs on this album. Read more

Robbie Fulks Coming To Folk School Coffee Parlor on 1/14 in Support of New Album “Upland Stories”

Folk School Coffee Parlor, Elm St, Ludlow, KY
6:30pm show, Buy Tickets

Upland Stories continues and — with sprinklings of pedal steel, drums, electric guitar, and keyboards — expands the sound of that acoustic set. Fulks’s richly emotional storytelling is illuminated by his instrumental prowess and emotional voice. At 53, he is philosophically reflective, writing “with clear eyes and a full heart” (Ken Tucker, NPR).  Don’t get us wrong, his wit is still as quick as his picking; but it’s reflected through the lens of fatherhood, marriage, middle age, and the literary voices he is drawn to and draws from: Flannery O’Connor, Anton Chekhov, Mary Lavin, Frank O’Connor, Javier Marias, James Agee.
