Soulful independent troubadour Shawn James will perform at The Southgate House Revival on September 27 in support of his new album, The Dark & The Light (released March 22). Inspired by an eclectic mix of blues, gospel, rock, R&B and folk, The Dark & The Light is the fourth album from James and his most fully-realized work to date.

On the new record, his extraordinary voice – a remarkable instrument that is equally powerful and commanding as it is soulful and nuanced – captures your attention right away, along with his honest lyrics and incredible musicianship. Billboard shared the “stirring, gospel-flavored” album opener “Orpheus” (Listen HERE), which was recently spotlighted by KCRW and Rolling Stone Country, who included the track in their “10 Best Country & Americana Songs To Hear Now” roundup. For more insight into his music, read this extensive Q&A feature via PopMatters HERE.

Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, James is a gifted vocalist who studied opera and classical music, and was a standout performer in gospel choirs as a kid. His penchant for songwriting stems from his genuine nature and his ability to be truly open and vulnerable through his art. Often informed by life experiences, his lyrics reflect loss and grief and also touch on events from his youth, including when he was forced to became part of the Pentecostal church. Despite these emotional themes, on the new album James strives to turn this darkness into light, weaving an undercurrent of hope and love throughout the powerful collection of narratives.

Shawn James has been an independent musical force who has flown under the mainstream radar since his debut solo album in 2012. Through his honest songwriting, remarkable voice and DIY ethos, James has built a strong and dedicated following and his incredible live performances continue to capture the attention of fans, as he plays over 150 shows annually both in the U.S. and overseas. Without a label, marketing team, publicity, promotion or even management, James’ music has generated over 75 million streams and his songs have been heard on television (HBO’s Shameless), in commercials (Harley Davidson) and even in video games (The Last Of Us, Part II).
