Chilling, soulful, and powerful are just some of the words used by audiences to describe The War and Treaty.  The husband & wife duo blend roots, folk, gospel, and soul, reaching back through their deep-rooted history to conjure up the strength of their ancestors. Their Down to the River EP (2017) boasts a sound that’s both stirring and sensual, driven by joy, determination, and an unceasing upward gaze. They are currently on tour, hoping to share songs of reconciliation and humanity, and taking listeners on a soaring, emotional ride.

“A late addition to the showcase lineup after Americana mainstay Buddy Miller had to bow out with illness, husband-and-wife duo The War & Treaty did not disappoint. With an introduction by Emmylou Harris and support from Miller’s all-star backing band, Michigan-based Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Blount-Trotter nearly leveled the Cannery Ballroom on Thursday evening. Mixing primitive blues, R&B and gospel-style shouting, War & Treaty’s songs like “Hi Ho” and “Down to the River” were tense and hypnotic, shrouded in darkness but punching their way to the light. Even the ailing Miller couldn’t be kept away, grabbing his guitar to sit in with the band for one song.” – Rolling Stone Country, 20 Best Things We Saw at AmericanaFest 2017

“Michigan’s The War and Treaty provided yesterday’s big bang. Cloudbursts of emotion thundered from their buoyant voices through the Carter Family’s “No Depression.” “My home’s in heaven,” The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya-Blount Trotter sang explosively, “I’m going there.” A crowbar couldn’t have cracked the sunny smile of Rhythm & Roots board member Ed Stout. They sang. He and the crowd burst like mighty clouds of joy. “Their voices are a tough act to follow,” said Stout. “It’s like the Rolling Stones trying to follow James Brown.” – Bristol Herald Courier
