Critically acclaimed husband & wife duo Shovels & Rope will perform at Madison Theater on March 1 in support of their celebrated recent album Little Seeds (New West Records). As songwriters, Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent (aka Shovels & Rope) have earned a reputation for being gifted storytellers, but Little Seeds is different from prior work in that the stories here are true and inspired by personal experiences and observations.

It’s received the highest critical praise of any of their previous albums, with many saying it’s their finest yet. Relix called it “…their most personal and powerful album to date” and Garden & Gun referred to the collection as “their richest and most personal album to date.” For more insight, check out Relix’s in-depth feature HERE.

“They mix all of my favorite genres (country, folk, punk, and rock) together
seamlessly, and have been releasing gorgeous “alt-country” albums years before
Kacey Musgraves and Sturgill Simpson were household names.”
 Noisey

Shovels & Rope’s penchant for writing literate, Southern Gothic infused songs that exude a dark humor, deep sentiment and the celebration of the genuine, quirky and beautiful things in life has never shined brighter than it does on Little Seeds (see videos for “St. Anne’s Parade” and “Botched Execution“), but it’s their live shows that have fans coming back for more. The duo’s recent tour saw many highlights, including a milestone three sold out shows in New York City. Paste named them one of “The 25 Best Live Acts of 2016“, saying “Shovels & Rope makes the barebones bone rattling, and that ingenuity makes them one of the best bands we saw live this year.” Check out their performance on Conan HERE and their stripped-down Baeble Music session HERE.

“Shovels & Rope’s hands are deep in the dirt on ‘Little Seeds’, making it one of
the finest records in roots music this year.”
– No Depression

Little Seeds is the follow up to the duo’s acclaimed 2014 release Swimmin’ Time, which debuted in the top 20 on the Billboard 200, #5 on the rock chart and #6 on the independent chart. The new album has received a diverse range of press support from the likes of The New York Times, Noisey, Entertainment Weekly and was featured with an interview and performance on the acclaimed CBC Radio program q (Listen Here). Shovels & Rope has also appeared on Austin City Limits, PBS Bluegrass Underground and twice on The Late Show with David Letterman, with a confirmed appearance on CBS This Morning airing in January 2017.
