Liz Longley is wrapping up a successful 2016 which saw the release of her sophomore Sugar Hill release, the acclaimed Weightless; opening for Delta Rae, and launching a well-received headlining tour across the US this fall.
Longley launched her national tour in mid-September, and has been playing to venues packed with enthusiastic fans. She will continue to perform her “intriguing meld of folk, Americana, and pop” (AllMusic) starting November 29 with a string of six headlining shows on the west coast, including stops in Portland, Seattle and Los Angeles. These dates will feature stripped-down solo acoustic performances that showcase Longley’s impressive vocals and song craft.
2017 will bring even more touring: singer-songwriter & fiddler Sara Watkins, best known for her work with Nickel Creek and Watkins Family Hour, is embarking on a series of solo dates, and she tapped Longley as the opening act on 17 of those shows in early 2017. A full list of dates is below.
Longley, a native of suburban Philadelphia, cut her musical teeth in that city’s indie folk scene. She has been invited to be one of the last artists to play at Philadelphia’s storied venue the Tin Angel, which will close its doors in the coming months. She reflects,”I was lucky enough to play the Tin Angel back when my parents drove me to shows. My aunts, uncles, cousins and friends would fill the seats before I ever had a fan that wasn’t blood related. One night Amos Lee was bartending there when I was playing. There’s so much history at Tin Angel and I am honored to be playing one of the last shows there before it closes.”
Longley recorded her acclaimed 10-song collection, Weightless, in Nashville with producer Bill Reynolds (Band of Horses, Avett Brothers, Lissie). She was joined by a vibrant group of musicians including Secret Someones’ drummer Zach Jones, Jimmy Wallace on piano (Gavin DeGraw, Kenny Wayne Shepherd), bassist Dave Roe (Dan Auerbach, Sturgill Simpson), and the esteemed Kenny Vaughan (Lucinda Williams, Rodney Crowell) on guitar.
The New York Times’ Jon Pareles wrote, “The title song of the roots-rock songwriter Longley’s second album, Weightless, turns the prosaic part of a breakup — dividing up the possessions — into a rite of passage. ‘You can have the couch, the lamp, the diamond ring/the books on the shelf, the dishes in the sink,’ she itemizes over one repeated chord, and soon, with everything cleared out including the bad memories, the electric guitar digs in, the drums kick harder and the melody ascends to where she can be ‘way up high beyond your gravity’ — unencumbered and free.”
