James McCartney has revealed the stunning new video for current single Unicorn, taken from forthcoming album The Blackberry Train.
Directed by renowned motion designer Sholto Crow, the animation brings to live the aural aesthetic of Unicorn, an urgently melodic track centered on the spiritual nature of psychedelic music, in a surreal and immersive way.
James said “Unicorn is a song that has elements of the avant-garde and psychedelic in it, and I wanted to use those elements in the video as well. It’s very trippy and cool, just like the song”.
On directing the video Crow said, “It’s inspired by James’ lyrics primarily, and also by Carl Jung’s exploration of the human psyche.
“The house as a metaphor for the subconscious, the emergence of thoughts and ideas, the development from primal to mathematical, inner and outer space, all pointed to by seeing the sequined head James commissioned by a South American artist
“It’s a homage to creative expression and the beauty of physics and space”
Unicorn is taken from the forthcoming studio album, The Blackberry Train. To accurately capture the music in his head, James sought out the distinct audio stylings of Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies and PJ Harvey). The results make for an edgy and eclectic album with fastidiously crafted songs documented in the studio with glorious purity.
