Kentucky Knife Fight kicked off 2014 with a tour that took them across the midwest and midsouth, after a year that saw the band performing at Midpoint Music FestivalTwangfestKDHX Fest (following an impressive showing last year at the KDHX day show at SXSW), with a handpicked slot by BMI to play LouFest (one of only 2 local St. Louis acts in the festival line-up). Kentucky Knife Fight sold out last year’s release show for their sophomore album Hush Hush, which peaked at #2 on the CMJcharts at St. Louis’ radio station, KDHX 88.1 FM, and has had an impressive run at college radio this year. In addition to the recent 3-show run with Old 97’s, the band also accompanied Murder By Death on some tour dates last summer, opened forLucero last August, and spent the winter writing the music for the PBS series “America: From The Ground Up!“, which will air later this year.

If there is a jukebox at the end of the universe, you will find Kentucky Knife Fight between The Stooges and Tom WaitsTheelectric-Americana band specializes in telling stories about desperate people doing desperate things in places they shouldn’t be. As the St. Louis Post-Dispatch observes, “[Kentucky Knife Fight] delves deep into [some] unfriendly topics.” Theirstoryteller is Jason Holler, described as “acidic” (Riverfront Times), “[delivering] his lyrics with a dirty, unctuous snarl” (Leicester Bangs) and “[possessing] a set of pipes that sound like Alice Cooper right about the time he was yowling about being 18” (Cincinnati Citybeat). Underlying these tales, and overarching the band’s punk/alt-country touchstones of foot-stomping numbers full of riff-heavy rocking, is their infectious pop sensibility. Check out “Father” for a taste of these pop chops interlacing their Riverfront Times-dubbed “hillbilly-noir” aesthetic, as well as a smoldering live version recently captured by Lofi STL.
