Pianist Simon Trpčeski, described as a “national hero” in his native Macedonia, will join the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at Music Hall on Friday and Saturday, February 8 and 9. Mr. Trpčeski will perform Grieg’s Piano Concerto, one of the most popular and romantic piano concertos of all time. Under the baton of acclaimed conductor Mark Wigglesworth, the Orchestra also performs Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, one of the boldest works in the symphonic repertoire. Premiered just after the death of Joseph Stalin, the Tenth Symphony has long been subject to debate as to the composer’s true political feelings. With Mr. Trpčeski’s fresh and sensitive interpretations and Mr. Wigglesworth’s promising reputation for enlightening audiences and critics with the CSO and elsewhere, this pre-Valentine’s program offers the sweeping, robust repertoire that showcases this Orchestra’s strengths.
Audience members are invited to attend Classical Conversations in the Music Hall Auditorium one hour before these performances. CSO Associate Conductor Robert Treviño hosts the event.
The CSO is extending a pre-concert dinner package for the Saturday night performance. The $80 package includes a concert ticket, a three-course dinner at Nicola’s Ristorante Italiano and complimentary shuttle service before and after the concert. Current ticketholders can add the dinner for just $50.

Simon Trpčeski, piano
With the ability to perform a diverse range of repertoire – from Haydn and Chopin to Debussy and Stravinsky – Macedonian pianist Simon Trpceski has established himself as one of the most remarkable young musicians to have emerged in recent years, performing with many of the world’s greatest orchestras and captivating audiences worldwide. Mr. Trpceski is praised not only for his impeccable technique and delicate expression, but also for his warm personality and commitment to strengthening Macedonia’s cultural image. The New York Times’ Anthony Tommasini praises Trpceski’s dazzling musicianship, saying “He tore through the double-octave outbursts with arm-blurring speed and no sense of strain. Yet in tenderly lyrical moments he caressed the phrases, playing with naturalness, never milking anything.”
Mark Wigglesworth, conductor
Born in Sussex, England, Mark Wigglesworth studied music at Manchester University and conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London. While still a student, he formed The Premiere Ensemble, an orchestra committed to playing a new piece in every program. A few weeks after leaving the Academy, he won the Kondrashin International Conducting Competition in The Netherlands, and since then has worked with many of the leading orchestras and opera companies of the world.
