Tegan and Sara are still on fire. This past year was a huge one for Canadian born twin sisters, with the release of the girls’ seventh studio album, Heartthrob – which marked their highest first week charting position of all time. The band scored their first mainstream hit with “Closer” and circled the globe in support of  Heartthrob. Next up the girls are taking off to sea with Paramore as part of the Parahoy!  cruise concert, then accompanying Katy Perry on the last leg of her international tour. In the meantime they’ve got a run of 19 headlining dates including a stop at NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom, and back-to-back nights in DC and Chicago in addition to some massive performances at slew of summer festivals. Mix the Hot Club of Paris with the sweaty soul of Dixieland, a couple blades of bluegrass, a pinch of ragtime beat, and a western swinging swagger and you’ve just conjured the sound of The Appleseed Collective. Over the past few years, the band has put the pedal to the metal touring the country in support of their 2012 release, Baby to Beast.

A showcase of the eclectic mix of writing styles, Beast feels youthful–voices calling out to you, the group blossoming around each piece. “The blends of swing, bluegrass, Dixieland ditties and alluring gypsy-folk whirls – is something close to a transcendent listen … you’re there, on some dirt road, being led on by these songs,” raves Jeff Milo of iSpy MagazineRead more

Cincinnati’s own Freekbass leaves tomorrow to participate in the London Bass Guitar show and Cincy Groove is lucky enough to be receiving updates from Freekbass himself on his experience on the other side of the ocean.  Be sure to keep checking back.

See the one and only Freekbass LIVE at the London Bass Guitar Show. Born and raised in Cincinnati, OH, Freekbass takes his inspiration from the likes of Zapp and Midnight Star to produce rich, bottom-heavy bass riffs.

After working in a music shop to pay off his first electric bass he had in lay-away, the young Freekbass began to study the classics of Larry Graham, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Parliament and Bootsy with a bass in one hand, and an MPC2000 in the other.

Since then, Freekbass has released five full-length CDs, including the current “Concentrate” featuring a stellar guestlist with Bootsy Collins, DJ Spooky, Adam Deitch, and Steve Molitz. Read more

The band was unceremoniously birthed in 1992 and they very quickly became a forebearer for the new style alongside Uncle Tupelo, Old 97’s, and Whiskeytown.

When The Bottle Rockets hit the scene in the mid ‘90s, the world wasn’t quite sure what to do with them. With their punk-rock pedigrees and arena-rock energy, their tougher-than-Springsteen storytelling and their romantic hearts sewn bare on their denim sleeves, the pride of Festus, MO confounded musical generalities as they laid waste to clubs across the Midwest and then, soon enough, the nation.
