Necessity is the mother of invention. Less is more. Make it work with what you’ve got. 2 Guitars, a junkyard drum kit (harvested from an actual garbage heap- adorned with tambourines, flowers and kitchen rags), a handful of harmonicas, voices, and above all.. songs. Hailing from Charleston, South Carolina, Shovels & Rope prefer to keep it simple. They have cleverly managed to take 3 separate recording projects and combine them into 1 cohesive, folk rock, sloppy tonk, harmonized, loose but tight, streamlined audience killing machine.

Shovels & Rope spent 2011 on the road. More than 170 shows and over 60,000 miles of windshield time, they traveled along side Hayes Carll, Justin Townes Earle, Jason Isbell, the Felice Brothers and Butch Walker and found time to write and record a new record along the way. Recorded in their house, van, and backyard, O’ Be Joyful is slated for release in Spring of 2012.

At the shows, expect to hear a little something from any or all of their releases – while the duo switch instruments and share lead vocal duties. Also prepare to rethink your definition of a live rock band.

The Ridges (http://facebook.com/TheRidges)

The Ridges are an orchestral folk rock group from the Appalachian college town of Athens, Ohio. A three-piece acoustic act formed out of the collaboration of longtime musical duo Victor Rasgaitis (Guitar, Vocals) and Johnny Barton (Percussion, Glockenspiel, Vocals) with the classical stylings of Talor Smith (Cello, Vocals), the trio regularly feature a rotating cast of up to six guest musicians adding instrumentation ranging from additional cellos and vocals to viola, violin, trumpet, banjo, dulcimer, mandolin and even accordion. Combined with layered, introspective songwriting and passionate, high-energy performances, the ensemble brings to life a theme of dark romanticism emphasized by their name. The band name, taken from the famously haunted local victorian landmark building that was formerly the Athens Asylum, speaks to the group’s fascination with folklore and classical influences as well as their deep rooted connection to the city of Athens.

Young Heirlooms (http://facebook.com/YoungHeirlooms)

Young Heirlooms is a new take on the evolution of folk music. With a focus on creating cerebral, well-composed music, Young Heirlooms is set out to mix your emotions with a wall of sound. Expect a choir of vocal harmonies similar to that of a Brian Wilson record. With songwriting influenced heavily by todays artists like Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes, Young Heirlooms brings a new element of shoegaze with melodic theatrics to their music amounting to something truly new and inspiring.

Renowned musicians Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto have announced additional details about The Crimson ProjeKct Presents…Three Of A Perfect Pair Music Camp, held August 20-24 at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY. The week-long excursion will be highlighted by a rare live performance by The Crimson ProjeKct at the legendary Bearsville Theater in nearby Woodstock, NY on August 23.

Bassist Tony Levin elaborates: “At the camp, Adrian, Pat and I will be giving classes. Also expected to be in attendance on certain days areMarkus Reuter, Julie Slick and Tobias Ralph–the other members of Adrian Belew Power Trio and Stick Men–which all together add up to The Crimson ProjeKct, who will have just spent the summer touring with Dream Theater. Count on a lot of insight into Crimson music, both at open rehearsals and at the Bearsville Theater concert where all campers will be guests for the soundcheck and show.”

Together as the musical backbone of progressive rock linchpins King Crimson – and separately through countless other bands, projects and collaborations – Belew, Levin and Mastelotto have helped forge the history of modern rock music over careers spanning five decades.

At the Three Of A Perfect Pair Music Camp, Adrian, Tony and Pat will share musical insight, meals, tales from the road, and even the stage during after-hours jam sessions with campers. Whether campers play guitar, drums, bass – or no instrument at all – Three Of A Perfect Pair offers a rare opportunity to learn, to play, to make new friends, and to get up close and personal with this trio of renowned musicians.

Class topics at the camp will include: musicality, bass sounds, guitar and vocal technique, tips for recording vs. playing live, 21st century drumming (man/machine), sounds (rhythm, beats, noises), taking the show on the road (how to consolidate ideas), and more. The week will culminate with a large group jam session that will be recorded for campers to take home with them on a custom camp USB stick.

Rumpke Mountain Boys will be play an opening set at 9 pm outside on the patio (weather permitting), then Oakhurst will perform inside with Rumpke closing out the night with a set.

Oakhurst is proud to announce their official CD release party in Denver at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, Saturday April 21st with Missed The Boat and The Quick & Easy Boys. There are three incredible VIP packages available for fans that include an array of choices such as a three course dinner at Appaloosa Grill (with the band), hotel rooms and even transportation on their private tour bus to the show. All those purchasing advance tickets will receive free downloads instantly.
Oakhurst founding members Johnny Qualley and Adam Hill are also Denver entrepreneurs who own and operate the Appaloosa Grill in Downtown Denver. The two acquired the spot in 2005 from then Mayor of Denver John Hickenlooper.

Oakhurst’s latest offering Barrel (their 5th), was produced and engineered by Joe Pisapia (K. D. Lang, Ben Folds & Guster) and was recorded at his own Middle Tree Studios in Nashville, TN. With Pisapia and Oakhurst front man Adam Hill’s collaborative songwriting and Pisapia’s guitar performances, Barrel takes a noticeable turn from the bluegrass tendencies that characterized the band’s previous efforts to a more genre-bending Americana and Bluesey reverberation. The arrangements and the harmonies are tight, pushing the songs towards a much broader audience with mainstream appeal.

Oakhurst has cultivated a more organic and mature sound, while seeking connection and inspiration from every audience they perform in front of.Barrel, being released on the band’s own imprint Oak Horse, was a 2 year labor of love minus the whisky that notoriously surrounded their songwriting in the past. With members coming and going throughout the process, Barrel features the breakout song ‘Out West’ which is a collaboration with Oakhurst’s newest member, Daniel Lawrence Walker and an outstanding guest fiddle performance by Jeremy Garrett of theInfamous String Dusters.

Barrel is full of surprises and will keep fans both new and old wondering what comes next.

“When you get right down to it, it’s all about the music, and while the music Oakhurst makes on Barrel isn’t the kind that defies description, it’s definitely the kind that defies any one description. The result is a perfect snapshot of an upward-bound quintet that’s as broad-ranging as any you’re likely to hear all year.”
 - Jon Weisberger, Nashville Blogger

Oakhurst will be hitting their favorite mid-west cities with $5 physical copies of Barrel weeks before the street date then circling back to Colorado to wrap things up. They will also be giving away free digital downloads of the entire album with all advance ticket purchases.
