It’s a special treat when Danny Schmidt and Carrie Elkin, who normally tour separately and solo, get to share the stage together.  If the chemistry seems especially sparkful, they come by it honestly, as they are a rare breed: a romantic partnership in real life, not just musical life.  And the two together on stage makes for a classic case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Shoot Out The Lights

Shoot Out The Lights

Interview and Live Photos by Scott Preston

Shoot Out The Lights at the Heights Music Festival
Friday 4/6/2012
Rohs St Cafe, 245 W McMillan St,  Cincinnati, OH,  45219
Music starts at 7pm with Shoot Out The Lights performing at 9pm
http://www.theheightsmusicfestival.com/

Shoot Out the Lights is everything the band’s name suggests and much more. Armed with loads of enthusiasm and never forgetting to Roll along with the Rock, the influences and efforts of this Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky based quintet are apparent on their debut self titled album. The band’s songs range from heartfelt love songs to more up-front sexual notions, and get-after-it rock n’ roll party songs. With the help of producer Mike Tekulve, the band created nine highly polished jewels and released the LP in March 2011.  The band is working hard to gain regional recognition and performances include songs from the new album, a mix of other new and old originals, and occasional select cover songs. Live, the vocal blending and wholehearted performances of Josh and Elaina is something music fans need to experience. Read more

Buddy Woodward & Brandi Hart from The Dixie Bee Liners

Interview by Scott Preston

The Dixie Bee Liners’ show on 10/31/11 starts at 8pm, and tickets are $10.  The Leapin’ Lizard Lounge is located at 726 Main Street in Covington, KY.  For more information, please call 513.509.0951, or visit The Dixie Bee-Liners on Facebook.

Though Monday’s concert will be full of spooky fun, The Dixie Bee-Liners take their music seriously. The ensemble has received worldwide acclaim for their innovative blend of traditional and contemporary sounds. The band has been heard on BBC Radio, The Food Network, Sirius-XM Satellite Radio, SkyArts Television, and hundreds of radio stations in North America and Europe. They were named Roots Music Association’s 2008 Bluegrass Artist of the Year, beating out such musical giants as Merle Haggard and Alison Krauss. Their 2008 cd RIPE achieved four #1′s on the bluegrass charts, and 2009′s Susanville was deemed “one of the most revolutionary bluegrass releases in recent memory” by Country Standard Time. The group is currently at work on a brand-new studio release, set for January. Read more

Sunspot’s music and live performance is a communal experience for the audience. Bringing people together is something they do extraordinarily well (there have been plenty of weddings from people that have met at Sunspot shows!) The band is about bridging the gaps in the human condition by making the show as much about the audience as it is about the band. Read more

Mountain Heart is the band that has been fearlessly revolutionizing the way acoustic music can be presented and played. The band’s name has been synonymous with cutting-edge excellence in acoustic music circles since the group’s creation in 1999. Widely known throughout the music industry for continually redefining the boundaries of acoustic music, the band has gained legions of loyal fans both as a result of their superlative musicianship, and more notably, their incomparably exciting live performances.

As one of the most highly awarded ensembles ever assembled, Mountain Heart, or members of the band, have either won or been nominated for Grammy’s, ACM, CMA, and multiple IBMA Awards. They have appeared on the revered stage of the Grand Ole Opry in excess of 125 times and have shared the stage with acts ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Montgomery Gentry, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Brad Paisley to Alison Krauss, Tony Rice, The Avett Brothers, Yonder Mountain Stringband, Levon Helm, John Fogerty and Patty Loveless.

Cincy Groove: Didn’t the band have a great run of sold out shows around the time you released “Things Just Happened” back in January of this year?

Jim Van Cleve: We ended up having a run of 9 straight sold out shows. That was unprecedented for us, so we were obviously pretty stoked about it. Ever since that run of shows we have had quite a few exciting things happen. Earlier this year we signed with The Roots Agency and also became involved with the Boots Campaign, which helps to raise money to help support returning troops in need. We also ended up signing a deal with The French’s Shoe and Boots Company. We have had some great shows this year and this year is probably the best year the band has ever had. Read more
