Going into 2015 Freek has a lot of things on the table. He just released his next album , “Everybody’s Feelin’ Real”, which is produced by Duane Lundy (My Morning Jacket’s Jim James/Ben Sollee) and includes P-Funk/Rubberband keyboardist Razor Sharp Johnson, horn man Skerik, and Trey Anastasio Band vocalist/trumpet Jennifer Hartswick . Also, he was a part of this year’s London Bass Guitar Show in the UK giving a master class and performing. Plus he will be doing extensive touring with his mainstay funk group, “Freekbass & The Bump Assembly”. (from freekbass.com)

Cincy Groove: How does your latest album compare to your previous releases? did you do anything differently? special guests?

Freekbass: very excited about this new album because of the way Producer Duane Lundy had us record it. We set up in a tight circle, with my full bass amp at the full volume I play at live, and recorded all of the bed tracks altogether. No overdubs on initial bed tracks. If someone made a mistake or didn’t like the way they played on the track, we started all over together. So what went to track was the same energy, feel, and vibe as you would have from a live performance. As well as drummers Chip Wilson, and Big Bamn who both play with me live, we had original Rubberband and P-Funk keyboardist Razor Sharp Johnson (who will be playing with us at Southgate tomorrow night) on most of the tracks. Also, Jennifer Hartswick from Trey Anastasio Band, and horn madman Skerik join in on many of the tracks. Read more

Interview with Jason Dennie – Performing At The Southgate House Revival On 11/21

Jason Dennie grew up around acoustic music. The sound of acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and banjo were pretty common and familiar to his ears by the time he actually had an interest in playing anything himself. Guitar was what he chose and while early influences could be named; Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Stephen Stills and Neil Young, the music that would come from him would always be a unique combination of everything he’d heard.

His main references were from the Bluegrass world, after all, that’s what most of his family played. He had a direct link to the heart of Bluegrass with his Grandfather being good friends with the man who had ‘started it all’ Mr. Bill Monroe, and an Uncle who filled the role of banjo player for Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys in the early 70′s. Jason can remember time spent at many Bluegrass festivals as a child and the sounds of Tony Rice’s guitar and distinct voice filling the house…to this day Tony Rice is still his father’s favorite guitarist. Cincy Groove: How did the two of you start playing together?

Native Run: After college the two of us met at church playing on the worship team together. It was divine intervention in a way.

Cincy Groove: What did you listen to growing up?

Native Run: (Bryan) I really started listening to music in the third grade.  The kids on the bus were listening to Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis.  Those were some of the first cds that I bought.  There was a store called Waxy Maxy’s that my dad would take me to on the weekends.  Eventually I started listening to metal music, bands like Metallica. Then came bluegrass, Nickel Creek, Infamous Stringdusters.  Really all over the map for me. Read more

As both an artist and a person, Tommy Womack has been called everything from “Tom Lehrer with a Telecaster” to “Nashville’s best loved musical eccentric,” and he might blushingly, but proudly, accept both titles. That’s because separating Womack the man and Womack the artist is impossible, as they’re both the same guy. An award-winning recording artist and a published author, Womack writes songs as honest as anything Hank Williams or Steve Earle ever recorded, and has attracted the attention of the national press while accumulating a loyal following. Some artists find their groove, develop an audience, and, once that’s done, never stray from the comfort zone they’ve created for themselves and their fans—and for them, that’s fine.  But that’s not Tim Shelton’s way.  And so, after sharing in the creation of NewFound Road and spending a dozen years guiding the quartet’s transformation from a purely Gospel group into one of Bluegrass music’s most distinctive and admired ensembles, the acclaimed singer is trading the safety of familiar ground and an established career to head for new musical territory.
