Kenny Roby’s life in music has been an intellectual and spiritual quest. The Raleigh, NC-based singer/songwriter has explored the history of music and its various forms with a musicologist’s zeal, absorbing it all into his art. Simultaneously, he has taken a long hard look in the mirror through the writing process, allowing him to discover and reflect back a piece of himself through his songs. Charting the continuum of that journey takes us to Roby’s critically acclaimed 2013 release, Memories & Birds, an ambitious vision of a Southern past littered with provocative characters and the dark, foreboding places they inhabit. LEOGUN distill gritty rock, swaggering blues, and haunting soul into anthemic and artful songs. The music remains strong, sexy, and staggering, echoing Jack White and Queens of the Stone Age with personal panache. In many ways, their entire ethos can be traced back to their name. LEOGUN means half-man and half-lion. It’s rather apropos with what’s roaring from their amps.
MTV premiered the music video for the band’s first single “Let’s Be Friends” in late September. MSN’s Reverb blog proclaims “sometimes it’s just a good, cleansing blast for the ears to hear some straight-up rock,” saying the song “could be a Led Zeppelin outtake.” Read more
